Support beyond housing

Housing alone, unfortunately, does not solve homelessness. Most of our clients have experienced profound trauma and adversity, leading to complex emotional, physical, and mental health challenges. To meet their needs and improve their life choices, FCA provides holistic, wraparound care that goes beyond crisis intervention, with the help of 1-1 caseworkers that support clients to develop the practical and emotional skills needed to move from survival to stability.

Freedom to Grow is a therapeutic community garden for our clients. It offers an environment for healing, learning, and connecting - a sanctuary where individuals can gain practical, transferrable skills, improve their mental health, build social bonds, and re-establish a sense of purpose.

Transformation is at the heart of what we do – now for spaces as well as people – with the allotment now open every afternoon to residents currently living in FCA supported accommodation, to attend in small groups accompanied by their caseworkers. But this space offers far more than gardening alone, it provides time for reflection, meaningful physical activity, social connection, learning, and a renewed relationship with nature.

What was once simply a neglected wasteland has now become a productive allotment that supplies the Freedom Centre kitchen with fresh produce and is now on its way to becoming something even more powerful: a therapeutic space that nurtures growth in every sense. Through Freedom to Grow, people are rebuilding their lives, discovering the joy of working with the earth, learning new skills, and gaining confidence through shared achievement.
